Today is a celebratory day for the outdoor industry. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) has released its latest Outdoor Recreation Satellite Account (ORSA) data, providing a comprehensive look at the economic footprint of our industry through 2024. The outdoor recreation industry isn’t just growing, it is a cornerstone of the American economy and a primary driver of prosperity here in Colorado.
Nationally, the outdoor recreation economy has reached a record $696.7 billion in value added, accounting for 2.4% of the U.S. GDP. Despite broader economic headwinds, the sector saw a real GDP increase of 2.7% in 2024, continuing to outpace many other traditional sectors. Across the country, the industry now supports over 5 million jobs, with employment growing by 1.1% this past year. These numbers continue to confirm that the outdoors are an economic powerhouse that bolsters local communities and creates resilient, high-paying jobs.
Colorado: The Gold Standard for Outdoor Recreation
When it comes to the outdoor economy, Colorado continues to lead the pack:
- Continued Growth: Colorado’s outdoor economy continued to grow 2% in 2024 over 2023.
- One of the top 10 States for total value added by the outdoor recreation economy.
- #1 in the Nation: The undisputed leader in snow activities (skiing, snowboarding, etc.), contributing a staggering $1.6 billion in value added to the state’s economy.
- $18.1 Billion in economic output in Colorado equating to 3.3% of the state’s GDP.
For El Paso, Teller, and Fremont counties, these aren’t just abstract numbers. They represent the lifeblood of our local businesses, the stewardship of our public lands, and the quality of life we all enjoy. In the Pikes Peak region, the outdoor industry is more than a pastime; it’s an economic engine. Pikes Peak remains one of the most visited mountains in the country, and the regional impact of our trails, parks, and waterways is a key factor in why businesses and families choose to move to the Front Range.
While we celebrate these record-breaking numbers, they also come with a responsibility. With increased participation comes the need for increased stewardship. As more people head outdoors to fuel our economy, PPORA remains committed to ensuring our natural resources—from the Ring the Peak Trail to our local canyon fisheries—are preserved for generations to come.
The 2026 BEA data proves what we’ve always known: The outdoors is a vital investment. Whether you are a local business owner, a land manager, or a weekend hiker, you are part of an industry that is powering Colorado forward.
